Events / Retro Pictorial Influences in Swedish Silent Films. Lecture by Magnus Rosborn The maritime tale “Terje Vigen” (“A Man There Was”) in 1917 was the beginning of the golden age of Swedish cinema. (The film will be shown on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2025, at 7:15 pm in Kolk 17.) International audiences in both Europe and the USA were particularly taken with the depictions of Nordic nature on the big screen. The directors and cinematographers oriented their often stunning landscape shots to the 19th century National Romantic movement. The popular genre of historical painting is also clearly reflected in the films. They often actually recreated a painting or dedicated the whole film to its motifs. Magnus Rosborn, curator and film restorer at the Swedish Film Institute, uses examples from paintings and films to discuss this unique artistic treasure trove from the north. The lecture will be in German.
