Vom Traum, unsinkbar zu sein / About the Dream to Be Unsinkable

More than a hundred ships once sailed the world's oceans on behalf of the East German deep sea fishing fleet. After the reunification and the liquidation of the East German combines, the fleet was disbanded and the ships were scrapped or sold. But what has happened to them since then? This film embarks of a journey of discovery that travels from Greenland to a Danish junkyard, and from the Mediterranean to the Port of Hamburg. A few ships still sail the waters today, while others have been repurposed – but many have already embarked on their last journey. As steel mementos of contemporary history, they all bear witness to a vanished industry. Tom Fröhlich's “About the Dream to be Unsinkable” reveals the life stories of these ships, and the significance the vessels have for the people who live and work on them. A multi-layered reflection on a changing world, globalisation, the fall of the Eastern Bloc, and “Fortress Europe”. And last but not least, an homage to the longing for freedom at sea. Narrated by Charly Hübner.
