Hip Hip Hurra!
Retrospektive, Sweden / Denmark / Norway 1987, 110 Min., sw., dan., norw. OV, engl. st
Peder Severin Krøyer (1851–1909) first visited artists Anna and Michael Ancher in Skagen in 1882. The following summer, a number of other painters travelled to the area, Norwegian Christian Krohg, Oscar Björck from Sweden, and Marie Triepke from Denmark. They would go down in art history as the “painters of light”. The film uses light-flooded images to follow the creation of their most famous paintings ... Based on Krøyer's group portrait of the same name (which he painted from a photograph by Schleswig-Holstein photographer Fritz Stoltenberg), “Hip Hip Hurra!” also illuminates the complicated web of relationships between the artists; their crises and quarrels, their fears and furors. Director Kjell Grede said, “The film is a fantasy about the Skagen painters. But nobody can say that it is not truthful. Everything that happens in the film happened or could have happened”. In 1987, it won the Special Jury Prize and Best Cinematography at the Venice Film Festival.
