The Painter

Målaren / The Painter

Retrospektive, Sweden 1982, 93 Min., sw. OV, engl. st

Stig works in a metal factory. But he and his colleagues are already feeling the pressure from the liquidators; the factory in Gothenburg harbour is threatened with closure. Stig paints and draws – even at work, which is not well received by his superiors or colleagues. Stig's only confidant is Eskil, who writes poetry during his breaks. Joining up with other employees, the two plan to take a stand against the bigwigs. Stig's painting becomes a means of protest ... The artist Ragnar Schmid, born in 1948, created expressive paintings from the world of work for “The Painter”. In poetic and nightmarish scenes, the film paints these images on the big screen with light and colour. Against the backdrop of Gothenburg harbour, “The Painter” is a swan song to the traditional labour movement, but the film also has humour. It became famous not least because of a choir of naked proletarians singing about the end of their working day while showering: “Come on, come on, it's Friday”.
