Edvard Munch
Retrospektive, Norway 1974, 221 Min., norw. OV, engl. st
Death and tuberculosis dominated the childhood and youth of Edvard Munch (1863–1944). He escaped his authoritarian father by joining the Kristiania bohemian circle around the free-thinking anarchist Hans Jaeger. He met the naturalist painter Christian Krohg and took painting lessons in Paris. In Kristiania (now Oslo), his expressionist paintings were met with incomprehension. In Berlin, they caused a scandal ... Social analysis and fictional interviews with Munch's family and acquaintances lend Peter Watkins' biopic, featuring amateur actors, a documentary flair. Framed by a broader portrait of society, it traces the artist’s personal development with excerpts from Munch's diaries and notes, while the depiction of his work on paintings and self-portraits illustrates his artistic career. Together, these elements make “Edvard Munch” an outstanding work of film and art history. – Paintings by Edvard Munch, who had close ties to Lübeck, can be found in the Behnhaus Drägerhaus Museum.
