O’Horten

Odd Horten has spent his entire working life as a railroad engineer. The driver's cab is his home, and train schedules have provided his life with rhythm and meaning. But now he’s going to be shunted aside. While his colleagues play train guessing games based on tape recordings, Horten stoically accepts his retirement. The camera follows the taciturn man who has been literally thrown off track with an emphatic eye. His last stop at the moment involves a deep drag on his pipe. Horten leaves the tracks behind and begins to try out other means of transport. He strolls, swims, straps on skis. In the process, he encounters people who seem similarly lonely or lost, like the peculiar inventor who invites him on a night drive in his beautiful Citroën DS. As he finds unimagined freedom in his post-work life, Horten takes a liking to adventures great and small.
