On her way to visit her mother, the thirty-something Pia talks on the phone with a friend who praises her for her regular visits. At her mother's house, her mother watches, with her arms crossed, as Pia, with almost intrusive casualness, puts away the groceries and asks to be paid back for her expenses. Later, at the table, Pia's mother raises the question of whether the two have anything left to offer each other, and whether it wouldn't be better if Pia were to look after her own life, which hasn't been a particularly happy one so far. Within the modernist house, a silence that has ruled for years suddenly ends and painful topics are raised. Contradictory feelings, such as affection and rejection, exist side by side. The silence of the black-and-white images is also eloquent. Winter light falls through large windows, and the living room oscillates between offering refuge and looking at times like a prison. The question the mother and daughter must face is what connects them besides their family relationship.
