The Love That Remains

Ástin sem eftir er / The Love That Remains

Narrative Features, Iceland / Denmark / Sweden / France 2025, 109 Min., isl. OV, engl./ger. st

A huge roof floats majestically through the air. It is hanging from a crane, which has just removed it from the empty warehouse in which the visual artist Anna used to have her studio. Her life is also falling to pieces. She and her husband Magnus are in the midst of separating. They have three children, but Anna is more or less raising them alone because Magnus, a fisherman working on the high seas, is often away from home for weeks on end. And when he is there, he comes across like a guest amidst his own family's life. The camera drifts with the characters and captures their moods. In the dangerous games that the children play, they act out feelings that they cannot put into words. Anna uses the unspoiled natural world as an open-air workspace for her abstract art. Iceland's pristine landscape and the changing seasons are more than just a backdrop. Some scenes drift into the surreal, and every image seems to question what remains of the love, the relationship, and the family.
