A Light That Never Goes Out

Jossain on valo joka ei sammu / A Light That Never Goes Out

Narrative Features, Finland / Norway 2025, 111 Min., finn. OV, engl./ger. st, 16 years and older

“I feel that I don't feel anything”, sings the young man during a concert in a church, his voice barely audible as the band accompanying him plays atonal sounds produced by, among other things, a kitchen blender filled with bicycle chains. It is Pauli's first performance in a long time. When he was nine, the prediction was that he would have a great career ahead as a classical flutist. But the constant pressure of perfection and the expectations of those around him led to depression. In the hope of recovery, he has returned to his home village, where he once again lives with his parents. But instead of practicing for a new concert, Pauli lets himself drift. In a pub, he sees a young woman playing her guitar in competition with a football broadcast. It is his former classmate, Iiris. Through her, Pauli discovers experimental music and his fascination for chaotic sound performances. Pauli, the perfectionist, finds not only solace in the atonal compositions, but also a new way of expressing himself.
